A small group of Beacon Academy students were proud to play their part in Crowborough’s Armistice Service on Monday 11 November.
The service at the War Memorial on Chapel Green included a parade of standards and maroon fire to signal the beginning and end of a two-minute silence. Members of the Student Leadership Team, Alteja, Ceylin and Altheya, performed a poignant reading of In Flanders Fields, the poem by John McCrae that inspired the use of the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance. Year 12 student, Natasha, gave an accomplished performance of The Last Post on the trumpet and the students joined others from local primary schools in laying wreaths on behalf of their school community.
To coincide with the service, a pre-recorded event created for all Beacon Academy students and staff was broadcast via the school’s YouTube channel, allowing for a collective moment of reflection and remembrance. The event, which featured a message from Beacon Academy’s Headteacher, Mr Keith Slattery, a reading by Year 7 students and a two-minute silence, encouraged viewers to pause and remember all those who have lost their lives in conflict, as well as those who have been and continue to be affected by war.
Beacon Academy is incredibly proud to be invited to take part in Crowborough Remembrance events and would like to thank Crowborough and District Veterans and Supporters Association, The Royal British Legion, Crowborough Town Council and All Saints Church for their support.
