Fitness comes to Lewes Prison

Taylor Wassell is behind a new scheme

A prison officer with a passion for exercise and sport in Sussex explains how he is using his own interest and skillset to help rehabilitate prisoners in his local prison.

Taylor Wassell, alongside other hard working prison staff, is playing a crucial role in supporting the prison system through challenging times, with prisons until recently close to full. Staff will play a key role in rebuilding the prison system so that it is more effective at cutting reoffending rates among those leaving prison.

Taylor lives locally and started his career as a prison officer seven years ago before moving into his current role two years ago. All prison officers have the opportunity to progress and become a Physical Education Instructor.

The 31-year-old previously had a career as a firefighter before moving to HMP Lewes after a recommendation from a friend.

Taylor is urging others to join him, and says:  “Everyone knows that prisons have faced challenges and being a prison officer is a demanding job but it gave me the experience and chance to do my current role. Giving prisoners access to exercise is vital and I’m so proud to do what I do.

“I have two gym memberships outside of work as fitness has always been a passion of mine. I’m naturally a teacher and like to develop people and teach them how to use equipment and how to achieve their goals. One of our prisoners is an aspiring personal trainer so we offer support and guidance which is all part of our efforts to reduce reoffending.

“It’s not just about prisoners physical health but their mental health and self-esteem too. Physical exercise has a huge positive impact on the mind which helps the prison run more smoothly as a result.”

Prison staff at HMP Lewes and across the country are doing an extraordinary job in challenging conditions. They will play a crucial role in supporting the prison system to make prisons safer and protect the public. You do not need qualifications to become a prison officer or to join in a support staff role. Prisons in Sussex are looking for caring people with good communication and influencing skills and effective decision-making.”

Applications for prison officer roles in Sussex are now open. Those who would like to take the first step towards a rewarding new career can apply or find out more by visiting Prison and Probation Jobs.
