Proclamation ceremony at County Hall in Lewes on Sunday

The Proclamation of the new sovereign will take place outside County Hall in Lewes at 1pm on Sunday, following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

It will be read by The High Sheriff of East Sussex with local dignitaries in attendance including the Chair of Lewes District Council and the Leader and Deputy Leader of Lewes District Council.

This traditional event takes place in towns and cities across the country to announce the accession which took place immediately after the Queen’s death. It represents one of the first occasions for people to gather and reflect on this moment in our nation’s history when the reign of our longest-serving monarch ended and our new sovereign succeeded.

A further Proclamation will be read by the Mayor of Lewes at Lewes Town Hall on Sunday at 3pm.

A book of condolence has been opened at Southover House reception in Lewes and will remain open until the day after the funeral. People are welcome to leave messages in the book during office hours and also this weekend (September 9 and 10) from 10am to 4pm.

Anyone wishing to lay flowers in memory of the Queen can place these at Lewes House, 32 High Street, Lewes on the front terrace.
