Storm Isha hits East Sussex

An amber weather warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office for East Sussex amid Storm Isha.

The warning is in place from 18:00 GMT on Sunday to 06:00 on Monday for East Sussex. The Met Office has said that the region could see gusts of 50-60 mph (80-97km/h), and potentially 80 mph (129km/h) along exposed coastal stretches.

Weather forecasters have predicted that there's a good chance of power cuts, which could affect services such as mobile phone coverage, probable damage to buildings, and some roads are likely to close.

Injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties, it added.

"Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea," the Met Office said, urging caution if walking near cliffs.

Sara Thornton, senior BBC weather presenter, said: "Storm Isha is a very strong storm with the potential to bring widespread impacts for the start of the new week.

"The strongest and most damaging wind gusts in the south east are likely to be from 9pm this evening until 3am tomorrow morning," she added.

Storm Isha is the ninth named storm since September, and follows on from Storm Henk which caused flooding and disruption across parts of the UK earlier this month.
