University of Brighton’s leading virologist chosen to lead top science institute

Renowned virologist and University of Brighton lecturer Dr Sarah Pitt has been named as President Elect of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). 

The announcement is in recognition of the significant contributions Dr Pitt has made to the field, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her dedication to public health and her ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to a wide audience have earned her recognition as a leading voice in biomedical science.  

As well her role as Principal Lecturer in the University of Brighton’s School of Applied Sciences, Dr Pitt has worked across the world in hospital diagnostic laboratories including in Africa, and Central Asia and has authored three influential textbooks in biomedical science, sharing her expertise with the next generation of scientists. She also served as a Media Fellow for the Association of British Science Writers, working with the BBC Science Unit to strengthen collaboration between journalists and scientists.  

Dr Pitt became a familiar face and voice during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing expert insights on the virus on television and radio across the world. She is regularly called upon to comment on other public health issues such as the recent monkeypox outbreak and rise in measles cases. Her commitment to public education and science communication has helped to raise the profile of biomedical science and its impact on society. She was named Biomedical Scientist of the Year by the Advancing Healthcare Awards in 2021 for her contributions to public safety and patient care during the pandemic. 

Dr Pitt is a longstanding Fellow of the IBMS and is a national IBMS Council member and Chief Examiner for Virology, she has played a pivotal role in advancing the profession through professional examinations, the development of the Specialist Portfolio, and championing continuing professional development for biomedical scientists. She was awarded Life Membership of the IBMS in 2021 and Honorary Fellowship of the Academy for Healthcare Science in 2023.  

Dr Pitt said:  

"I am deeply honoured to have been elected as the next President of the IBMS and I'm eager to embrace the challenge of continuing the remarkable work it does to enhance the impact of our profession. I am committed to building upon these successes and further strengthen the IBMS."  

I hope that, in my career in teaching, I've inspired students to understand the critical role biomedical scientists play in healthcare, from diagnosis to research. By connecting with more members and strengthening our collaborative network, we can continue to make significant contributions to patient care and advance the field of biomedical science."

As President-Elect, Dr. Pitt will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the IBMS and will work closely with the current President, Joanna Andrew, to advance the interests of biomedical scientists and promote the profession before assuming the presidency in January 2026. 

With her deep passion for teaching, research, and advocacy, Dr. Sarah Pitt is set to lead the IBMS and its members into a bright and impactful future.
