Sleuth Review - Devonshire Park Theatre Eastbourne

Sleuth, has been touted as "The World's Greatest Thriller" and it certainly lives up to it's billing! 

Many of you will need little introduction to the plot or storyline, as Anthony Shaffer's play has been on stage since 1970! You may also remember the film, starring Michael Caine.

The opening night on Monday 4th March at Eastbourne's Devonshire Park Theatre, featured two fine actors at the top of their game. Coronation Street star Todd Boyce, who played Audrey Robert's murdering son in the soap, was not performing on the opening night and his place was taken by understudy Lee Peck, who played the role of Andrew Wyke. 

Starring alongside Peck, was former Eastenders star Neil McDermott, who plays the role of Milo Tindle in the play.  

The cast has been known to consist of five actors, but the production in Eastbourne is starring only two. 

The play opened with Peck, portraying a famous writer, who is dressed in a velvet smoking jacket and is giving the audience anecdotes from his latest book that he is in the process of penning.

McDermott soon enters the fray and is keen to "plot" with the author. Before you know it, there's clowning around and sparring that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats!! 

The set is amazing and will have you thinking that you are sat in a stately home, rather than a theatre. It even has upper levels, a stunning fireplace, grandfather clock and lavish fixtures and fittings. 

The running time of the play is just over 2 hours, but it seemed to go very quickly, with light-hearted moments along the way, that ensures that you will never look at a "Whodunnit" in quite the same way again!
